Bee Movie: Music From The Motion Picture

It’s pretty obvious that Ratatouille set up a new standard for animation; following suit, Michael Giacchino’s score was among the best of 2007. Jerry Seinfeld’s animation debut, DreamWorks’ Bee Movie, pales a bit in comparison, and so does Rupert Gregson-Williams’s score, which is competent but also struggles to establish an identity of its own. The first track, “Graduation,” oddly sounds a little like the theme for a ’60s TV Western, an impression confirmed by bits of “Honex”–at times you feel as if you’re listening to the imaginary score for a remake of Bonanza. It’s obvious Gregson-Williams (not to be confused with his brother Harry, an animation specialist who’s also scored the likes of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) has soaked up the classics: “Assault on Honey Farms” has moments of James Bond-esque grandeur, while “Honey Round Up” pulls off the funky, horn-laden vibe Bond sometimes prefers; elsewhere, “Ken” nods in the direction of Nino Rota. Dialogue cues might have helped lighten up the mood, but there are none. The CD is rounded up by two pop tracks, the Archies’ “Sugar Sugar” and Sheryl Crow’s faithful cover of the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun. ” –Elisabeth Vincentelli

“Any man’s my man if I want it that way.” The speaker could only be Joan Crawford, as a wicked man-eater terrorizing her Deep South household in Queen Bee. Crawford’s the whole show in this campy 1955 melodrama, which aspires to be second-rate Lillian Hellman but doesn’t even reach that level. Having trapped a wealthy Southerner (Barry Sullivan) into marriage, Crawford takes her main pleasure in making life miserable for the other women of the mansion. This is fun to watch for a while, but director Ranald MacDougall (he wrote Mildred Pierce for Crawford) can’t get the pace moving, and the final comeuppance is all too predictable. Crawford was going into her final high-diva phase at this point in her career, all chalky makeup and yard-long eyebrows, and Queen Bee clearly points the way toward What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Star power prevails, however, and at least the picture summons up its share of unintentional laughs. –Robert Horton

There are some hysterical moments in the film, as one would expect from a Seinfeld production, and an abundance of one-liners, double-meanings, slapstick humor, and innuendo-laden dialogue that will keep adults guffawing throughout the show. Still, the whole concept of seeing the life of a common pest through non-human eyes is getting repetitive thanks to films like Ratatouille, Flushed Away, Open Season, and Over the Hedge.
